Cuba's main labor organization says the state is to lay off more than 500,000 public sector workers by March.

The Cuban Workers Confederation said the country cannot and should not continue supporting businesses, production entities and services with inflated payrolls. It said the losses hurt the economy and are ultimately counterproductive, creating bad habits and distorting worker conduct.

Alleged drug kingpin Christopher "Dudus" Coke was extradited Thursday from Jamaica to the United States, where he is to face drug and weapons charges. His extradition occurred two days after he was taken into custody in Jamaica and several hours after he had waived his right to an extradition hearing in Jamaica. Coke arrived at about 7 p.m. at White Plains-Westchester County Airport outside New York City.

A state of emergency has been declared in parts of the Jamaican capital Kingston, after local gang members attacked several police stations. The men are supporters of an alleged drug lord, who could face extradition to the U.S. where he is wanted on narcotics and arms trafficking charges. Gangs began barricading roads and preparing for a stand-off last week, after Jamaica reversed its refusal to hand Christopher Coke over to the U.S.
