From a practical standpoint, Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) — often called “Roissy” after the nearby area of Roissy-en-France — is widely regarded as the primary airport serving Paris and the wider Île-de-France region. Opened in 1974, it was named in honor of Charles de Gaulle and gradually took over the role of the older Paris North Airport facilities paris-cdg-international-airport.com . Today, CDG is located about 25 km (15.5 miles) north of central Paris. As a transport hub, Paris Charles de Gaulle International Airport (CDG) functions on a scale that reflects its national and international importance. CDG is France’s busiest airport and one of Europe’s leading aviation hubs. After the sharp decline in passenger numbers during the COVID-19 years, traffic has recovered strongly. In 2024, the airport handled roughly 70.3 million passengers, placing it among the busiest airports in Europe and maintaining a major role in both passenger and cargo operations. In terms of infrastructure, CDG operates multiple terminals with distinct architectural concepts, including the well-known circular design of Terminal 1 and the extensive Terminal 2 complex used by major international carriers. Passenger experience varies depending on airline, terminal, and time of travel. Peak hours can result in extended security and passport control queues, while off-peak periods are generally more manageable. Signage is multilingual and relatively clear, though first-time visitors may find transfers between terminals time-consuming due to the airport’s size. Ground transportation options are comprehensive. Rail connections, regional trains, buses, taxis, and private transfers link the airport to central Paris and surrounding suburbs. Travel time depends heavily on traffic and service frequency, but rail is often considered the most predictable option during busy hours.
