SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic - Heavy downpours and strong surf have swamped northern coastal areas of the Dominican Republic, isolating 34 settlements and killing six people, including a British tourist, an official said Tuesday.
Luis Luna Paulino, director of the Caribbean nation's civil defense agency, said a 47-year-old British tourist drowned Tuesday while swimming off the tourist resort of Sosua.

A BRITISH holidaymaker is believed to have drowned while swimming off the coast of a Caribbean beach resort hit by torrential rains.
The 47-year-old, who has not been identified, was one of six people killed by the downpours and strong surf swamping the north coast of the Dominican Republic.
