This was actually one of my primary goals as I joined Jagex. We discovered that we could implement our games on consoles. Although technically, it's feasible, how would platform owners view the RS gold free to play model? This is a great point. This is precisely where we are at the moment facing problems and this is what we're having to discuss with platform holders.
My goal is to make every game totally free for every platform, while preserving the model of free-to-play. Although I think this is the direction that the industry should be heading, I don't believe that's what they'd like to see. This is because everything on WiiWare/PSN and XBLA comes with a price tag.
So I believe that free-to-play games will probably be charged at a nominal fee, so you have to pay for the download and, if you want you can pay for the premium version of the game. This is the way it appears to be right now. However, things are constantly changing. But, I'll be contacting these businesses to let them know of my preferences and advise them to keep up with current tastes and provide gratis games if they wish to compete in this market.
How much luck have you had in pitching every platform holder the free-to-play concept? I don't have the time to go into specifics. I don't want to talk about specific companies when we are in the process of discussing them, and nothing has been finalized yet.
Geoff Iddison was the former Jagex CEO of Jagex. He said that he wanted to combine the premium subscription model with micropayments. What are your thoughts on this idea? I don’t think it’s possible to use a Runescape or retrofit microtransactions to create your own. It's too large, and I don't think it will add value to our players. It is possible to increase the profitability of the system however it will cost players excessively.
Why is it that MMOs are so closely connected to free-to-play games? I think that many people feel an MMO implies that you'll be spending a significant amount of cheap RuneScape gold time with the product, therefore, I believe the free-to-play model compliments this more since it permits players to ask themselves 'do I want to spend a significant amount of time on this'.
