Inboxes filled with P2Pah editors are often inundated with spam, however, several suspicious emails that made it through the junk-mail filters this week indicate the existence of a spammer who is attempting to fool World of Warcraft users or Steam users into giving up their account details by using a technique commonly referred to as phishing or spoofing.
The first email arrived on the night before on Sunday. It claimed to be from Steam's creator Valve Corporation. The message read "Dear Steam User This is an official announcement from STEAM and STEAM Corporation that your Steam account will be removed and deactivated if you do you do not contact us immediately." To avoid the threatened deletion, the e-mail recipient was told to send an e-mail to steam.admins@gmail.com "with you [sic] login details," specifically a user name, a password, and a real name.
The scammer allegedly used an e-mail sent out in the previous attempt to phish to create a template. A copyright statement in the middle of the email stated not just that the contents were the copyrighted work of Valve Corporation, but also an image that implied the fact that Valve was an Equal Housing Lender in accordance with Federal Fair Lending Laws (a logo that when clicked was linked to Bank of America's webpage regarding their Equal Housing Lender status).
A new version of the Valve scam that posed as phishing was received early on Monday morning, with this time linking to an external website which resembles the official Valve site. It also requests the account details of users be used to sign into their account. Although it was clarified that the language had been improved but it was still the Equal Housing Lender logo remained.
On Monday night, a few of almost identical e-mails were received looking for World of Warcraft account login details. They appeared to be from account@world, and had the similar formatting and phising techniques buy madden nfl 23 coins that were used in the first Valve email. The spam also carried it's Equal Housing Lender logo.
