Reaper of Souls, with its adventure modes that are D2R Items generated in a procedurally-generated fashion is designed to be that next layer. Mayberry declares that the expansion makes the game more of the sandbox experience, and less like a directed experience that closely mimics the original games.
"If you go to traditional Diablo--Diablo 1. Diablo the first version of Diablo is a game that plays through the story of the game. That was the paradigm they came up with at the time, and one of the biggest challenges to create Diablo was to figure out, "What do we hold on to from earlier games and how can we make different to make it better?'" That focus on just the story "made the game feel less engrossing than it actually was," says Mayberry. "Because it's always being driven by the story--go there and now you're forced to go there."
Players who have shied away from Diablo because of its poor assortment of loot might be able to find sufficient new loot that warrants another look. It is now possible to be compatible with one another, Mayberry explains, and there are a lot of combinations for interesting character builds. "I was able to get something that dropped at the time I was awarded the Massacre bonus.
It caused gold to pour down. Then I came across something that boosted my gold drop by about 35 percent or so, so that made even more gold. And then I got something that, when I bought gold, it was based on how much I bought.
Would temporarily increase my toughness. Thus, gold became a mighty weapon for me! With my Wizard I would squeeze as many guys together as I could, and then burn them down, they'll emit gold, and then I'd grab the gold and my strength, for a short time increased by hundreds of percent."
Mayberry states that he's feeling that he's missed "half of a game" should he go back to vanilla Diablo But does this mean players need to shell out more money to get the experience they're entitled to? "You don't have to. We made it so that you don't. Patch 2.0.1 is totally attainable to any player who doesn't purchase it. But it would be an injustice not to buy it because we've made some improvements to the game. And I feel like it's a good thing that Reaper of Souls really pushes Diablo down the path it's supposed to buy D2R Ladder Items be on."
