In the past, a lot of these gold-miners were based in China. Some were confined to OSRS gold makeshift factories, where they slaughtered virtual ogres and looted their bodies during 12-hour shifts. There were accounts of Chinese government using prisoners to build gold farms.
In RuneScape the black-market economy supported by gold farmers was rather small--until 2013. Many players were not happy with how much the computer game has changed since it was first introduced in 2001. They contacted the developer to reinstate the previous version. Jagex released a version from its archive, and players returned to what came to be called Old School RuneScape.
Many of them were similar to Mobley. They played RuneScape in their teens and were nostalgic about the angular graphics and kitschy soundtrack. Although these 20- and 30 year olds had plenty of time as children however, they were now juggling responsibilities beyond homework.
"People work, and are likely to have families," said Stefan Kempe another well-known maker of video content on RuneScape which has nearly 100,000 subscribers, and goes under the SoupRS. SoupRS when he was interviewed. "It's the only limit to how much time they have to play daily."
The game isn't easy. To increase a character's agility from one to 99, the highest level, it would require more than a week of unending play in accordance with a comprehensive guide that was released by the creator. When they realized they could have more than just their allowances as teens, players like Mobley, who works in the data center, decided to bypass the grind of advancing their characters in exchange for rare items, and the often tedious early parts to the game.
Others like Corne, a 21-year-old software developer located in Arnhem, Netherlands, who refused to disclose his last name. He bet gold, and by extension real-world currency, on duels against other players. "I love money. If it's in real life or in RuneScape and other games, money is buy OSRS GP great to have," he told me in an interview.
