The West Indies players who declined to play in the first Test against Bangladesh are unlikely to back down and apologise to the West Indies board, raising the likelihood of a weakened side for the second Test against Bangladesh even though they lost the first by 95 runs in St. Vincent.
Dinanath Ramnarine, the chief executive of the players' association (WIPA), said the players were united in their resolve. "They're very strong … and although they want to play, they're not going to back down under this pressure," he said. Ramnarine added that WIPA had consulted lawyers and a number of legal challenges to the WICB's position were being discussed.
The former West Indies leg-spinner disclosed that the striking players are unfazed by the WICB's demand for an apology or face non-consideration for selection to the squad that will take part in the ICC Champions Trophy this September in South Africa.
"They are very strong," said Ramnarine. "They want to play cricket for the West Indies. But playing under the same conditions, they don't feel that it is right, and no human being should be asked to play under the conditions under which the WICB is asking them to play."

The crisis in West Indies cricket deepened with the board saying that the second-string side currently playing in the Test series against Bangladesh would be considered for selection for September’s Champions Trophy. “This ensures that there will always be a solid pool of approximately 29 contracted players from which to draw for the board’s future tour commitments,” West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) said in a statement.
The board hastily pulled together a second-string team that included nine uncapped cricketers for the first home Test series against Bangladesh following a boycott by its top players because of a long-pending contractual row with the WICB.
