Led by Louisville star Samardo Samuels’ 7 points, Jamaica jumped out to a quick 20-10 lead on hosts BVI in the first quarter.
Led by Samardo Samuels’ 17 points, Jamaica dominated the paint, pounding the BVI inside, avoiding the shot blocking of the BVI’s Kleon Penn, who for the first time in the tournament ended the game without stopping a shot.
The BVI slowly chipped away at the Jamaica lead of 17-point points and was within striking distance in the fourth quarter down by only two points, before Oritseweyinmi Efejuku sank two free throws with six seconds left to secure the Jamaica victory.
Kenney Bass scored 17 points for the BVI, including a three-pointer to tie the game at 70 in the final 2 minutes and a fast break layup to give the BVI a three-point cushion to secure the win. Randy George (13 points) scored a layup to give the BVI a 74-73 lead. Bass could have dunked it, but opted to directly put the ball into the hoop.
“I know I just had to make it clear that I made the basket. I know they had some time on the clock, but I just wanted to make it. Nobody expected us to be here, we bring a whole island together,” Bass said while hoisting a BVI flag among a slew of fans.
