Deadly Clashes in Honduras as Ousted Leader Tries to Return
-

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras — As the ousted Honduran president, Manuel Zelaya, headed by plane toward Honduras Sunday evening, huge crowds of his supporters clashed with soldiers and riot police at the airport and the interim government vowed to prevent him from landing.

Supporters of Mr. Zelaya carried the body of a man said to have been shot dead by Honduran soldiers outside the airport.
Vowing to return home to recover his presidency, Mr. Zelaya boarded a plane in Washington for Honduras on Sunday afternoon with the United Nations General Assembly president, Miguel D’Escoto Brockmann, and a small group of advisers and others.

The de facto government of Honduras yesterday set up roadblocks around the airport and suspended all flights as the deposed President, Manuel Zelaya, prepared to make a defiant return to the country.

The military-backed government was installed in a coup exactly a week earlier. The international community nominated a senior UN official to travel with Mr Zelaya, who before boarding a flight from Washington bound for the Honduran capital, Tegucigalpa, urged his supporters there to mass at the airport in an act of non-violent protest.

he interim government in Honduras has told the Organization of American States it wants to start talks, a senior U.S. official said on Sunday, as ousted President Manuel Zelaya departed for his country.

Zelaya's plane is expected to be diverted to El Salvador if it is refused landing in Honduras, the official said, calling the situation in the Central American country "very fluid and challenging."

The interim government's request for talks is a welcome step, but it has not said what its goals are for that dialogue, the senior U.S. official said.
