An unnamed member of the Jamaican Olympic 2008 athletic team has tested positive for a banned substance. A Jamaica Olympic Association official made the disclosure, confirming unofficial reports.
The athlete, who was tested during the June 27-29 National Track and Field Championships, is, however, not one of the country`s big names, association president Mike Fennell said.
`I am extremely disappointed,` said Fennell, declining to name the athlete until certain procedures are followed, including a second test. If that is positive the athlete may be banned for two years.
The positive test is the second caught by Jamaican authorities in the last four years. Sprinter Steve Mullings, who won the 200 meters at the 2004 Olympic trials, was banned for two years after testing positive for testosterone.
Some international and regional officials have expressed concern that Jamaica isn`t testing their athletes rigorously enough.
But Fennell said 96 tests have been carried out on Jamaican athletes since the start of the year. The positive test is proof the system is working, he said.
